FAKE IS NEVER A GOOD THING- PART 1
FAKE... SUCH A BAD WORD. AND FOR VERY GOOD REASON.
OK SO WE NOW BRING YOU TO OUR DINING ROOM. WHERE THE CHIMNEY AND THE ATTACHED WALLS ARE COVERED IN FAKE BRICK.
OR SO WE THOUGHT.
CHRIS WAS SURE THAT THE "FAKE BRICK" WERE JUST PANELS THAT COULD EASILY BE REMOVED LIKE THE FAKE WOOD PANELING. BUT NO. OH NO.
FAKE BRICK ACTUALLY MEANS REAL BRICK, BUT JUST THE THIN FACING. THE PREVIOUS OWNER USED ACTUAL MORTAR TO ATTACH THE BRICK TO THE PLASTER WALLS AND THE CHIMNEY.
GOOD TIMES.
SO WHAT WE THOUGHT WOULD BE A QUICK DEMO TURNED INTO MESSY PLASTER DEMO, NEW SHEET ROCK & SOON TO BE NEW BASEBOARDS.
HE TRIED...
WE DECIDED TO LEAVE THE CHIMNEY WITH THE FAKE BRICK ON IT AND JUST PAINT IT WHITE SINCE IT WAS WAY TOO HARD TO GET OFF THE CINDER BLOCK UNDERNEATH. I WOULD LIKE TO MOVE INTO THIS HOUSE AT SOME POINT. AND POTENTIALLY DAMAGING THE CHIMNEY WASN'T IN THE BUDGET.
CHRIS TOOK THE PLASTER & LATHE DOWN ON EITHER SIDE OF THE CHIMNEY TO PREP FOR THE SHEETROCK. WE HAD PROFESSIONALS PUT UP THE SHEETROCK AND SKIM COAT SINCE WE HAD TO DO A FEW MORE WALLS UPSTAIRS.
DURING THE RENO A FEW FAKE BRICKS POPPED OFF WHICH WE WISELY HOARDED. CHRIS GLUED THEM BACK IN PLACE WITH QUICK SET EPOXY & I GOT TO CLEANING THE DECADES OF GROSSNESS & PLASTER DUST SO WE COULD PAINT.
THIS IS WHERE WE LANDED. SOME PEOPLE SAID DO A 2ND COAT ON THE CHIMNEY.
SOME PEOPE SAID DON'T. I CHOSE TO SAY GOOD ENOUGH...
WE HAVE TO INSTALL BASEBOARD ONCE I FIND THE STYLE/SIZE THAT MATCHES THE EXISTING ONES ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROOM. DON'T WORRY I HAVE LOTS OF BOOKLETS TO SORT THROUGH FROM KUIKEN BROTHERS. ALSO WE HAVE TO CAULK WHERE THE BRICK MEETS THE WALL SINCE ITS A BIT JAGGED. NOTHING YOU CAN DO THERE.
SOME OUTLET COVERS AND THIS ROOM IS ON ITS WAY.
STAY TUNED FOR FULL REVEAL ONCE WE GET A TABLE IN THERE.
